Case Study: Piling in Bristol
We recently completed a challenging project of Piling in Bristol, involving the installation of 220 mm Ø steel cased driven piles and reinforced concrete (R/C) beams.
The site presented difficult ground conditions, requiring careful planning and execution. Our skilled team utilised specialised equipment to install the piles to the required depth and ensure stability. We then constructed the R/C beams, providing a strong and level base for the subsequent construction phases. Despite the obstacles, we delivered the project on time and to the client’s satisfaction.

Project Brief:
This project involved the installation of 30 steel cased driven piles to facilitate a two-storey extension and ground-level decking. Two piles were installed internally to support existing building alterations and steel columns, 20 piles were dedicated to the two-storey extension, and the remaining 8 supported the decking structure.
The project also included the construction of reinforced concrete beams ranging from 450 mm x 450 mm t0 600 mm x 450 mm. Which were finished off at a level ready to take the walls and block & beams floors.

Scope of works:
- Provide design and calculations from plans and soil report provided to us.
- Install a test pile before works begin to guarantee ground conditions.
- Pre bore piles to 3 m 250 mm Ø
- Installation of 30 steel cased driven piles.
- 2 internal piles to support existing building alterations and steel columns.
- 20 piles for a two-storey extension.
- 8 piles for ground-level decking.
- Construction of reinforced concrete groundworks.

To ensure precise pile installation and minimise material waste. We employed trench form to retain loose soil after excavation, acting as a barrier to reduce grout loss and optimize concrete usage. Our powerful D1000 piling rig efficiently installed the 220 mm Ø steel cased driven piles. To mitigate vibration and protect the existing house, we bored the piles 250 mm Ø to a depth of 3 meters, demonstrating our commitment to both structural integrity and minimising disruption to the surrounding environment.

Site Preparation
Precise site preparation is essential for accurate pile placement and a successful construction project. As shown in the image, the client meticulously marked out the site, with profiles strategically positioned at all beam intersections and grid lines. This careful planning ensures that the centre of each pile is precisely located, forming the foundation for a structurally sound build. While profile setup requires an initial time investment, it’s crucial for establishing a reliable framework that guides the entire construction process. Accurate and well-placed profiles serve as invaluable reference points throughout the project, ultimately saving time and ensuring precision in all subsequent building phases.

This image showcases the meticulous groundwork undertaken to prepare for further construction. A reinforced concrete cage with spacers securely retains the excavation sides, preventing soil erosion and ensuring foundation stability. With the ground level expertly reduced, the site is now primed for the next building phase. This careful approach highlights our commitment to delivering structurally sound and successful projects.

This image showcases precision in reinforced concrete construction. The clean lines and accurate dimensions where a 600 mm x 450 mm beam meets a 450 mm x 450 mm beam exemplify the high standards we maintain, ensuring structural integrity and an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Concrete Pour
Pouring concrete for this project presented logistical challenges due to the volume required and restricted access to the rear of the property. To overcome these obstacles, we partnered with a local Bristol-based concrete boom pump service. This allowed us to efficiently pour the concrete beams and fill the decking piles situated at a lower level in the garden.
These lower-level piles, separate from the main building structure and featuring isolated pile caps, did not form part of the ring beam. This strategic approach ensured the stability and integrity of both the extension and the independent decking structure, while also optimising the concrete pouring process.

Despite restricted access, we efficiently poured the concrete beams, completing the groundwork for both the extension and the independent decking structure. This project highlights our commitment to providing robust and aesthetically pleasing foundations that exceed client expectations, even in demanding urban environme
